Hi everyone, just curious, what are the technical considerations, pro's and con's of adjusting the hangpoint on a trike forward or back.

For what I know
Forward
1) Cruise speed in the air will increase.
2) Landing speed will increase.
3) Stall speed will increase.
4) Vertical speed will decrease.
Backwards
1) Lower cruise speed
2) Vertical speed will increase.
3) Lower stall speed.
4) Landing speed will decrease.

Not only that its automated and its the best thing since Kornflakes ..
Call me for and for a small fee we can arrange...
Newer smaller actuators (Hiwin) make for extermely neat and smooth operation

You are on the very dangerous way.Vertical speed mach more depend of power.then the angle of attack.

Hello Violavia
Yip it's true. I'm just comparing apples with apples. If you take a 582 trike and you shift the wing forward, climb out rate will decrease and if you take the same plane and shift the wing backwards your clinb out will increase.

Do please take heed of the wise words above from the Demon...
The setup is generally very strtable and works just like any manual changes but with electric actuator you can experience GUT renching reaction especially during turns and moving the hangpoint at same time - ....ask me I know!
Im luck as I have a very stable and reliable wing to work with - cant tell you how yours would react!
My buddy flies a 12.9 Cosmos on a Std open trike and is always cautious, only activating on the straight and level and never at full taps, rather slowing down first and then changing it.
The wing will often judder if actuator not powerfull enuf and mounted on the side or top of keel rather than underneath. This is a "high" inspection and possibly maintenance item. Never OIL it as youll just grind down the keel and it makes a helluva mess
One only really needs 50 - 80mm travel, I have somewhat more
Practice at different settings and always make small changes in the beginning.

Hi Junkie,
give us more gen on the trike you fly, and about the wing.
What is the difference in trim speed if you move the trim from full forward to full back.
I was surprised at the big change in the position of the bar when flying solo vs when flying with an instructor.
Regards,
Arnulf

15sq m Alpha wing std unmodified
Mainair Gemini 582
30mph safe speed trimmed all the wayback, 75 mph with the trim all the way fwd & bar all the way back (if you inhale deeply and squeeze in the old tummy and tug a little harder you can get her up to 80mph) :D :D
Obviously not too comfortable, hardly ever fly the Gemini 2 up but the number hardly change but in region of 30 to 68mph, with the ol 582 working up a bit of more steam
trim fwd 60mph @ 5000rpm all day long straight & level
I know ive been advised against fitting a 100hp Hirth, but it sure would make it effortless

Junkie,
do you then have a default setting for landing and taking off? Based on Demon's statement that the bar would get heavier as you go forward it would obviously affect the round out and flare.

As a norm I reset hangpoint to approx first position ahead of centre for landing and take off, as I feel I have better control over the trike and wing
I regularly also practice with hangpoint setting all the way back (slowest) or fwd (fastest) as well
Hirth is slightly heavier and 100 horses will overpower the Gemini - I think one would probably find thrustline issues also

I fly an Aerotrike with 503 and 14,8 Spirit 2 wing. Currently the hangpoint is furthest back, cruising aprox 46mph, bought the plane like that 2years ago but find myself always lagging behind on flyaways or flying with a group etc. Therefor the question to move it forward and how far, the main consideration was to be able to at least keep up with the others and at the same time not compromise ie. safety etc.
Suggestions!

Fly up front with your local instructor and make small changes and see how it feels untill your comfy with bar, speed, etc
