Free/Cheap GPS Navigation App for Android ?

Postby Quicksilver Fanatic » Sat Jun 06, 2015 11:08 am

Hi All,

Does anyone know if there are any Free (or cheap) GPS Navigation Apps available for Android?

We need to undertake 2 cross country flights and the Mini iPad (with EasyCockpit) is to large to mount on the Quicksilver.

1) I suppose one can try and mount the Mini iPad as kneepad but worried it might drop (a long long drop).
2) Find out if the same license will work for EasyCockpit on the Android Phone. I mailed Aviationdirect.co.za have not heard from them yet (are they the dealers for EasyCockpit?). I have a Joggers Strap for my Samsung S4 Galaxy and were thinking to use that.
3) Download a Free or Cheap App

Any assistance will help.

Thanks Guys

IMHO there aren't any that really just work AND have up to date airspace's for S.A. I have tried most of the apps available on the Play Store that are free or have a free trial(about 8 of them), I even tried some apps not available on the play store, including the Garmin aviation app, most of them are aimed at pilots flying in other countries, not SA. Having previously used Air Navigation Pro on iOS(Apple) I bought the android version and like the other reviews on the play store I was not impressed with the android version, slow, laggy. On my S4 it is usable, however in phone mode you lose some functions due to the smaller screen, on my less powerful galaxy tab it is a nightmare, however so far, according to me it is the cheapest viable android solution @ R280 once off and it is what I am currently using on my trike, with a knee-pad. The demo of EasyCockpit ran very smooth even on my under-powered tablet, it received many good reviews and has many functions aimed at the African pilot, it is however too expensive for this recreational pilot who won't be using the app to earn money, as per their website price listing:

1. EasyCockpit Current User with valid subscription: ....... R500.00
2. EasyCockpit Lapsed User: ................................................ R678.00
3. EasyPlan Current User with valid subscription: ............ R856.00
4. EasyPlan Lapsed User: ................................................... R1,034.00
5. New User, EasyCockpit on Android only: ..................... R1,265.00
6. Subscription Renewal EasyCockpit on Android ONLY .R 360.00
7. Subs for EasyPlan/EasyCockpit on Android together ...R 534.00

The other option I have considered is simply buying an old Iphone 3GS or IPOD touch and using it exclusively as an aviation gps with Air Navigation Pro or Std for iOS.

I tend to agree with Luan. Airnav Pro works but it is not nearly as good as Easycockpit on my Android phone. Not even close. But hen I guess you get what you pay for in terms of price.

I tried AirNav on my Galaxy S4 on Tuesday from FAWB - FAKS - FAWB in the Sling, comparing it to EasyCockpit all the way.
Very impressed !
Especially it being FREE.

Thanks for all the input Guys (^^)

Please try android app - polaris navigation - its free
it has offline maps and seem to work without internet or network only with gps
but I have not tried it over a long distance, only above builtup areas

I also tried avnav and naviator (nb no g) - need to buy it, and until you do you cant download maps
but both seem quite nice.
