I would like to have an answer in general.

Every so often an aircraft comes along with high airframe hours, and the question arises, will I be throwing money into the water.

There is a Piper Tomahawk available now for $23 500 New Zealand. 3000 hours to go on airframe time. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =548027415

A few weeks ago there was a Cessna 150 for $15 000.

This is cheaper than most blik microlights with comparable performance, ie Pioneer Alpi and Tecnam.
