Drakensberg Flying

Postby coline » Tue Mar 22, 2016 11:44 am

Thinking of Flying down to the Drakensberg this weekend.

Please advise your thoughts - El Mirador or Dragons Peaks.
What permission does one require. Where exactly can we now legally fly around that area?
Landing to refuel at Escourt Ultra City - what are the facts?
Anyone wish to fly with?

Please help

Speak with Grant. He flies that place like he owns it.

A Lekker weekend at Dragon Peaks. A few rules but flying is not really affected. As always stay away from concentrations of people and they wont complain about the noise! Thanks to the Dragon Peaks Resort for the runway and tie down area. Big thanks to Gregg from Westlne Aviation for the flying guide, AIP and mapped routes and then thanks to Deez from Escort Ultra City. I touched a rock on in the grass and got a cut tyre. Flo supplied a new one and Julius flew it down to me same day service so I flew it out with a fresh wheel instead of taking a chance.

6 years since I last flew there and although there are more rules and some restrictions, it is still a great place to fly!
The trick to enjoying it is plan, plan, plan and ask the local pilots to share there local knowledge.

Last thanks to Bobby for permission to land at Glenside.
