Changes to JHB Special Rules area since 2009

Postby CommanderKeen » Thu Feb 07, 2013 9:59 pm

Not sure where to post this. I am not in SA at the moment and am trying to find out the changes in frequencies and procedures that may have come into effect since I last flew there in 2009.

I will be entering the Johannesburg Special Rules Area from the North West around Hartebeespoort dam and routing to Grand Central (FAGC). When I last did this I could fly pretty much straight from the dam to FAGC reporting on 125,8 (Special Rules West), then switching to FAGC 122,8 when crossing the N14/R28 Krugersdorp highway. Is the procedure the same, or is the some new procedures in place now?

Hi Commander, not sure on what exactly has changed (if anything) since that time but here is a breakdown and map of the current airspaces and frequencies in use:

Thanks Bundy

Changes I see are the addition of JHB Special Rules South on a separate frequency, and more controlled airspace now between 6500' and 7500'. It looks like if I stick to 6500' or below it should be the same as before. Just not sure if there are rules in place now for the Kyalami VFR route between Grand Central and Lanseria.

No changes, flew that route a few times from kroon to fagm, 6500' routing south, 7500' routing north. Report Attridgeville and then crossing krugersdorp highway to fagc

Report on 125.8 that you are routing south 6500' following the kayalami vfr south route.

Enjoy

Hi, just a slight correction on Chris' comments. Special Rules is 7000' South, 7500' North or below 6000'. (^^)

JHB Special Rules has remained almost the same for SRE 125.40 Mhz , and partially for SRW 125.8 Mhz.
So coming from the West to FAGC remains unchanged.

SR South 125.60 Mhz has been added South of the M2 staring at Rand airport along the M2 to Gold reef City, to Soccer City, to the Orlando cooling towers and along the Potchefstroom road, (Everything north of this line is still SRW) and South West of the N3 up to the above boundry is now SRS.
