Do you fly with glasses?

Postby bobthebuilder » Mon May 14, 2012 7:56 pm

I went for my medical exam today. I have been asked to come back in a few days to do the eye test again. My right eye seems to be fine, but vision in my left is not sharp and clear. I do have a mild infection in the left eye which is a contributing factor.
What are the requirements for aviation?
Can one fly with glasses?

I fly with classes, like with car license they just state it on the license, no problem.

Yip, I use multi-focals, so get better long-distance vision and can also read my instruments and knee-lists with ease!!!

I have included "Corrective Lenses" on my Pre-Engine Start check list, as there is nothing worse than getting airborne and suddenly realising that you cannot quite make out the detail on your instrument panel! Long-sight is not really a problem in this case because you can't see what you can't see!!

Also now ensdorsed licence with corrective lenses required. Has made me switch to a helmet now, as goggles not very comfortable.

In some instances - you may also need to ensure that you have a spare set of corrective lenses available as required by the CATS. I carry a spare set in my flight bag for that snap ramp inspection.

Do you fly with glasses?

Postby John Young » Wed May 16, 2012 12:30 pm

Hi Byron,

Take an instructor with you the first time you fly with glasses.

The runway may "have moved" during hold off as your peripheral vision will get altered.

John

I did an eye test mid last year when my drivers license was renewed, and had no trouble seeing the letters then.
Lets see tomorrow if the doc says I need to get glasses.

Ha Ha! Funny!

But seriously ... I went for the test again, and passed it.
Got some drops to clear the infection. All good again.
No glasses required yet.
