Guillaume rent a small car instead of a 4x4 and you will save lots of money right there.
If money is tight avoid private game ranches. Go to Kruger National Park. It is not a park surrounded by city's but one hell of a experience getting there.
Wish I could help you more.

Krugersdorp game reserve is also a very nice budget option in the Johannesburg area. You'll see White Rhino, Buffalo, Giraffe, Hippo a number of Antelope as well as Lions in the lion enclosure. You can go on a guided game drive, horseback ride (recommended) or take your own vehicle. I'ts the kind of place you can comfortably stay for about three days and it won't cost an arm and a leg.

Pilanesberg is pretty nice - and have a greater variety of animal species and vegetation, but you'll probably need a couple more days to explore it properly.

There are also a number of good game lodges to the north of Johannesburg. Look at http://www.cullinanmeander.co.za/Maps/D ... _2005.html. Mongena, Intundla and Savannah lodges are prety good at reasonable rates.

Kunkuru www.kunkuru.co.za is another pretty decent bush lodge with excellent hospitality about 2 and a half hours from Jhb.

If you absolutely have to have a crack at "experiencing the big five" then Kruger or one of the private reserves is your best bet, but expect to pay more.

For a list of all South African game reserves and parks visit:

http://www.sanparks.org
also see:
http://www.flyinsa.de
Its in German, but the pictures also tell a story if you can't speak the language.
A small car is a much better option than a 4x4. You most probably won't need a 4x4 unless you plan to go on some serious off-road expeditions.

I agree,

The one thing I truly believe is we aviators have a heightened sense of pride for our beautiful country. I myself will always help people understand just how magnificent it is. I think it is because we get so see so much of it from a unique perspective. I love flying in this country. :-(-( ($$)
