Low Flying over Borakolo this Sunday
Hi Folks , once again we have had 6 microlights doing low flying over this park .
In the past there has been much debate and request to refrain from low flying as well as landing as it is a sensitive issue with Rhino Poaching .
The Parks board has submitted reg numbers which have been passed on to the powers to be .
I just ask is it neccessary to fly over this area after many previous debates , Regards Leprachaun

Re: Low Flying over Borakolo this Sunday
Hi There,
Sorry for the Ignorance! Yes we did fly over that area on Sunday.
It was a lovely flight there and back! It was the first time we went that route as we were invited to a landing strip North to Borakolalo. ( Borakolalo used to be Klipvoordam, To the North of Dikhololo to the North of Brits. )
I Have read many back issues, but haven't read any issues on this area, Sorry again.
We did fly higher when we went back.
I Will Contact the owner of the above landing strip and ask him to be careful in the future and also advise future visitors about the situation.
Strange enough, we discussed the fact that the animals do not seem to react when flying past at all. Not one animal reacted to any of our passes except for the birds.
Happy flying and safe landings.

Re: Low Flying over Borakolo this Sunday
I suppose ignorance cannot be an excuse but I only now learned that this is in fact a national park
There was definately no malice intended when we flew over and I thought that we were at a reasonable hight, but granted not the 2000feet AGL required for a national park
Why on earth did the GPS not have it listed as a National Park? Maybe I missed it
My advice to everyone is to avoid Klipvoor dam - Period

I was also one of the group and was also not aware that it was a national park I was informed that it was Barakalalo and thought it a private lodge. Agreed, ignorance is not an excuse!

I was also in the party I was between 5000 and 5500 but also thought it’s a game reserve and not a national park.
Gps sais it’s a game reserve but I just had a look at the Aeronautical map and it sais National Park
In future I will warn the guys that’s flying out to me
Sorry

Re: Low Flying over Borakolo this Sunday
HI all, yes Borakalalo has been a hotspot in terms of rhino poaching for the North West Parks and Tourism Board so they are very sensitive to any aircraft over the reserve. My phone was buzzing on Sunday with reports from Bora. We are all aware of the scale of poaching (189 rhino's so far this year) so please be aware and of these area's and avoid them. Private farms will be just as sensitive especially if they have rhino, private owners have lost as many rhino as the provincial parks this year (about 51). They may be tempted to haul out the .303.

Re: Low Flying over Borakolo this Sunday
To all involved, I am VERY dissappointed This is so UN-South-African-like. These days the accused will start blaming the previous regime, play the race card, blame the park for moving underneath the flight path, or saying they were mis quoted in the media.
In stead, you owned up, say you were sorry, and all aviators can learn from the mistake. THIS IS SERIOUSLY PROFESSIONAL. This attitude prevents accidents, WELL DONE!!
