Cheers

Re: The KWiK R story
OK, so I check on Wikipedia (should have done it first). Reason for question was
1. When I asked CAA what mode I should purchase to ensure I dont need to change in a few years time they couldnt answer me. Europe went Mode S and plenty people had to lay out twice (they had recently invested in a mode C)
2. When I attended the ATNS/Airforce briefing regarding Confed cup (to see if I could fly without a xponder), they said they dont want anything more than Mode A.
3. So watch this space, soon CAA will insist on mode S for all aeries but no ground equipment will be able to query it (apart from aeries equipped with TCAS)
So I guess you have done the right thing, does anyone know when Rainier's xponder will be available ?
From Wikipedia
Mode A and Mode C
When the transponder receives a radar signal it sends back a transponder code (or "squawk code"). This is referred to as "Mode 3A" or more commonly "Mode A". A transponder code can be paired with pressure altitude information, which is called "Mode C"
Mode 3A and C are used to help air traffic controllers to identify the aircraft and to maintain separation.
Mode S
See also: Air traffic control radar beacon system#Mode S
Another mode called Mode S (Selective) is designed to help avoiding overinterrogation of the transponder (having many radars in busy areas) and to allow automatic collision avoidance. Mode S transponders are compatible with Modes A & C.This is the type of transponder that makes the ACAS II (Airborne Collision Avoidance System) and the ADS-B (Automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast) systems function.
Mode S is mandatory in controlled airspace in many countries. Some countries require that all aircraft be equipped with Mode S, even in uncontrolled airspace. However in the field of general aviation, there have been objections to these moves, because of the cost, size, limited benefit to the users in uncontrolled airspace, and, in the case of balloons and gliders, the power requirements for these aircraft that have limited electrical power.
Mode S features
Mode S transponders broadcast information about the aircraft to the Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR) system, TCAS receivers on board aircraft and to the ADS-B SSR system. This information includes the call sign of the aircraft and/or the transponder's permanent ICAO 24-bit address in the form of a hex code.
Cheers ian

Re: The KWiK R story
The Trug avionics transponder that you are most likely having fitted "Mode S" is by default design a Mode A, C and S in its integrity. It will basically talk to anybody, anywhere as required, and being Mode S be spoken to when needed ! Nice bit it has a in built altitude encoder. Ballito will be having a mandatory fitment in the next few months to allow us to fly in proximity to the new La Mercy airport.. I will be fitting one of these devices very soon as its very small and compact, ultra light and designed specifically for trikes. Google "Trig Avionics" in Scotland. Met them at Popham. There are several stations being established that can interrogate Mode S in the region. My neighbour happens the be the consultant for the country. I think East London and George very soon....
Suggest that you ask them where the antenna position is located ? I am making a laser cut dish under the fuel tank for the Aquilla. Be also nice to have a Voltmeter fitted, and a soft start module for the 912s..
The Vee rabbit will be sent later today..

Centrifugal force in pure Physics does not exist, however this does not apply to Taxi drivers..

Re: The KWiK R story
Do you have to wear lead underpants once you have fitted a transponder to your trike? I am still planning on having another kid first before I fit any kind of transmitting antenna under my butt...........

Re: The KWiK R story
Just my 2c. Transponder is only necessary if you fly inside controlled airspace. Below controlled airspace it is not necessary. I would spend the boodle on radio rather than transponder. In the sticks they can't even receive Mode A under 10'000....
Demon
If you guys can fly inside FALA TMA from Rietties (for past 100 years) then I don't see why a TX is necessary for anyone..... Amaising what a little co-operation can achieve....
PS
As mentioned above
Mode A is blip only
Mode C is Blip with Alt.
Mode S is the whole shebang (A, C & S).... (They can even tell what jocks you are wearing and if they been soiled cause you in IF by "mistake"
