The Buzz, did you consider the Berkut as well? Its basically an evolution of the Long EZ thats even faster, has nice features like retractable gear, and it has pre-fabricated components available to save some building time. Uses a bit of carbon fibre too. A bit more $$$ though.

I guess what I'm actually asking is has any of these Long-EZ spin-offs actually improved on the Long-EZ?

Sorry for the late reply, Lots have happened and much progress made:-
Jig box complete
Laser cut templates made for the Roncz canard
Much foam cutting practice
Much layup practice
Booked for a composite course at AMT on the 12th March. R950 pp all day cant wait!
Resin warming box complete
1st edition original rutan factory plans and drawings in hand , MANY THANKS Byron! no more scale issues..
Water jetting of parts and aluminium supply set up.
1/5th scale EZ derivative (Velocity from www.parkjets.com) educational layup RC plane coming along very well. We decided to build this rather than throw away all of the layup practice. Far more fun to crash it in spectacular fashion.
Premises under renovation in Jukskei park

O!, a mate of mine is building another one in tandem

If all goes well we hope to start the full build in 2,5 months

Nomie, the Berkut kills people. speed issues and no there has been no better Long EZ. The history of this little plane is unlike any other. NASA adopted it as a airframe to evaluate and quantify so that they could test alternative propulsion methods, Pistons, Turbines, Jets, Pulsed detonation engines, electric (world speed record), rockets, rotary engines and the list goes on. Everything is known about this little plane (1980 to 2003). As with any really good design the flight mission of the airplane is very narrow when it comes to shifting of the CG. This tells me that the plane is very efficiently set up to do one thing : - go fast and go far at maximum efficiency. Its records attest to this fact. Rutan calls it a touring aircraft, I call it a two seat airliner.....

3 Months on!

Surely all practice projects must be done by now...

Has the main build been started?

Ok,ok..
So we have nearly completed the 1/5th scale EZ, final sanding wheel pants and paint to go. This was a fantastic way to exercise the ignorance and now we have a "pretty close" scale model to fly. Its more fun than throwing all that layup practice, sanding and painting in the bin as pieces
Much was learnt in the last 3 months and I feel confident of my skill level to commence the full build within a month or so.
ZEN and the art of sanding, materials, shaping, wire cutting etc.. All down pat.
The assembly premises are now almost complete, lights and plugs to go.
If someone can tell me how to upload a picture ill send one of the "little easy". She's a beauty in her own right.

Pics will be awesome!

Hmm I *think* if you go to the full editor by clicking on "POSTREPLY" or "Quick reply" and then "full editor", you just select the "Upload attachment" tab under the editor to upload your picture.
