ATT Funeral Wake

Postby Nkwazi » Thu Oct 29, 2009 3:45 pm

I just received a rather distraught call from Andy K at Petit. The trusty old Windlass ATT with 1875 hours on the 503 finally suffered a heart attack this morning and before it could become terminal she was grounded.  Now I'm sure many flyers (myself included) have fond memories of the old girl and she has guided many a daring young man through the thrilling adventure of obtaining his wings.

As a mark of respect Andy has asked that we all honour her at a braai at Petit Airfield on Saturday 7 November. All are welcome to witness the last rites being read followed by a celebration of her life through various forms of refreshments.

See you all there (^^) (^^)

My family and I will be there to pay our deepest sympathies and last respects. I am sad beyond what anyone could ever believe.
My deepest condolences to the owner, instructor'S, and all who were brought joy by ZU-ATT.

Ah it's just the 503 that had a heart attack guys. We have a suitable donor heart lying in the store room and hopefuly that one will continue the tradition.
Nuts about Cheetahs. Petit is the place.

I know the doctors will do a good job reviving her.
I was just sympathetic to get invited to that braai.

Right the autopsy results are in. We pulled the engine apart which at total time is around 1870 hrs with one top end rebuild in it's life. The pistons are in very good condition and the barrels are spotless. All the crank main bearings also spotless. The culprit in this case that started making noise was the big-end bearing on the magneto side. The end to end float looks quite reasonable but there is a lot of movement axially on the rod. When you look closely the needle rollers inside the conrod shows pitmarks and they are loose in the cage. Based on this engine We would recommend a crank change on 1600 hours and a top overhaul at 800 hours. All the casings are perfect - the crank case spotless and the rest of it in good condition. With a change of crank and new pistons she'll be brand new again.
By the way - she never died - still brought the people home - Andy just heard a knocking.

After all the insults that Rotax has received related to costly parts and exhorbetant engine prices this living mechanical legend once again proves that when utilised on a regular basis and cared for you will get great service from the Rotax motors.
The donor 503 has 160 hours on it currently and made way for the 618 on my Antares 100 hours ago.
ATT will surely experience a couple of new wing covers during the life time of the new 503
