Re: CAA Certification on the UFO Gyro

The temps on normaly aspirated engines are cooler. The EGT is within spec on the UFO. Here is some EGT info from the rusubaru.com. When do EGTs become “too high”? This is a highly debated topic and much was written on it by various sources. EGTs are too high when they begin to pose danger to engine ...

Re: CAA Certification on the UFO Gyro

Magnifan, where were you when I needed you? How would you explain torque and hp, then convert it to useable thrust? Never mind, I am confused already  explain to me as to some of the possible reasons/causes as to why the exhaust system on your gyro glows cherry red EGT at 5000rmp is 820 deg cel...

Darren, that's understandable

This particular engin can deliver anything from 208hp to 280hp and 300Nm torque and up, depending on the application.

We do not need that much power on the UFO. Our aim 260-280kg static thrust and low engin rpm in cruise.

Re: CAA Certification on the UFO Gyro

what sort of HP and Torque figures is the current engine configuration producing? I can not give a simple answer for you question, but will try to explain. Torque and hp does not give a clear indication of power output, since we use thrust as propulsion. Depending on the reduction drive and prop co...

Re: CAA Certification on the UFO Gyro

Everything came together on Saturday. New exhaust fitted, made from stainless steel, ceramic coated to preserve the stainless and keep the heat where it works best. We added heat deflectors, which is not on the photo below, all the cables, water and oil pipes stay at a touchable temp. We are moving ...

Re: CAA Certification on the UFO Gyro

For everyone wanting to attempt what we have been up to with the UFO, here is a lesson to be learnt concerning heat on the exhaust when a turbo is fitted. I suppose JVL will be able to give the technical speech on what happens when you change from normaly aspirated to turbo charged on a engine, to m...

Re: Gyros burning after impact?

Die pilot was baie baie gelukkig hy het nie aan die brand geslaan nie. Very lucky pilot. Something else that could have made a differance for this pilot, there wasn't a turbo that was red from the heat under that engine. Although I understand that petrol can ignite from as low as 350 deg celcuis. E...

Re: QNH

Len, flying with you that day was a awsome expierience.

From a microlight background, and a novice gyro pilot, it gave me a lot of
confidance in the gyrocopters ability to fly in windy conditions.

As it is often said, gyro's are aviation best cept secret ##

Yes and we prefer nice weather as well for recreational flying Johan, that is true for most of us. Len Klopper is the exception to the rule. With this front moving in from the south, the QNH dropped from 1013 in the morning down to 1006 at 16h00 (**) QNH is normaly between 1018 and 1030 here in Hartbeespoortdam area for those who don't know.
